Evoqua Selected to Supply Odour Control System for Metro Vancouver

Biological Odour Control will achieve greater than 99.9% hydrogen sulfide removal while treating broad-spectrum odours

The South Surrey Interceptor is an extensive piping system that collects and conveys approximately 500 million litres of wastewater daily from municipalities in the eastern area of Metro Vancouver to the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant located in the City of Delta, British Columbia.

Challenge

In recent years, there have been odour issues related to the South Surrey Interceptor due to population growth and neighborhood density. Metro Vancouver is taking steps to address these odour issues by constructing air management facilities to treat and reduce odour along the pipe route. The air management facilities will also reduce corrosion and extend the service life of the sewer system while also lowering maintenance costs.

Solution

At the Delta Air Management Facility, Evoqua will provide two BTF-Bioscrubber Biological Odour Control Systems, a custom-designed activated carbon scrubber, and ancillary components. The dual-stage system can achieve greater than 99.9% hydrogen sulfide removal while also treating broad-spectrum odours. The activated carbon scrubber will utilize Evoqua’s Midas® OCM high-capacity media, which will provide additional air polishing and redundancy during maintenance events.

Evoqua's BTF Bioscrubber Biological odour control system is an advanced, non-hazardous biological air treatment system which integrates equipment, media, and the NUCIRC process for optimal performance and flexibility. The NUCIRC process allows operation in recirculation and/or once-through modes to deliver accelerated acclimation that is ideal for odour control and hydrogen sulfide removal.

During the single-stage mode, a recirculation pump continuously circulates the sump liquid over the media beds. In dual-stage mode, the recirculation pump continuously circulates the irrigation over the lower beds (first stage), while a smaller stream of makeup water is intermittently sprayed over the top bed (second stage). This dual-stage process results in the growth of an extremely robust and efficient biomass to achieve very high odour removal capabilities.  This process responds more quickly to variations in odour inlet concentrations versus the more common single pass, intermittent irrigation technology available in the industry.  The BTF-Bioscrubber biological odour control system can also be operated in intermittent mode for low hydrogen sulfide broad spectrum odour applications.
